Social media has been like a best friend for small businesses. Nowadays any business can generate buzz via blogs, twitter, facebook, youtube, etc. With social media, budgets don’t determine coverage and press releases are archaic. But still, there is something admirable about earning traditional press coverage. It almost solidifies your business as legit. Social media, though effective, has a circus-like aura about it. The funniest, most outrageous, even ridiculous content goes viral. There’s an ‘anything goes’ vibe about it. Trends are the law and online trends last maybe 24 hours (more like 2 minutes). Traditional press is stable. It requires personal contact (not just a Linkedin connect). Its somewhat harder to come by, so getting it is rewarding and looked at with respect. Gimmicks are usually frowned upon, objectivity is still desired, and the ink is forever (all my online press coverage links for my 1st business are now broken or removed).
So the question now is, “How do I get traditional news reporters to publicize my business?”
I found this article, 6 Ways To Pitch Your Business To News Agencies, written by Karlee Weinman on www.openforum.com. Some of it is general stuff you may already know, but I think you’ll find ways to improve your approach to the traditional press.
